Origami

Creator: John Montroll, Folder: Diana Neuman
This picture had a little bit =) of photographic effects added, without effects try here.

I have been folding origami since I was 6 years old and my step mom showed me how to make a balloon. Over that time I have collected quite a collection of books. One of my first books was a Montroll and I think that since a lot of the models I did in my youth were from Montroll I have adapted to his style, and they are a lot easier for me to fold.

I have added in my list of books what models are contained in some of the books and the links go to pictures of the models. In assoictaion with Amazon.com the links off of the title and book pictures go to Amazon.com and will connect you directly to the specific book. A lot of my pictures are still under construction but at least most of them you can see an outline of a creature. All of the pictures presented here are folded by myself and described in the book they are presented under. I also have a listing of the pictures by type, so it you are looking for a particular creature or want to compare the different folds try here.

I have created my first model from design to diagrams!! click here to see the pages.

The World of Origami, Isao honda, 1965
Contains a very good introduction, a lot of simpler designs, and many multi piece models that form very nice animals. A good start to finish book.
The Complete Origami Course, Paul Jackson, 1989
Like it sounds it has a very complete introduction to origami. Including a very good description of different kinds of papers there effects and uses. Some of the models at the end look painstaking though (like the sleigh). Many of the models presented are made with several pieces of paper. Several different artists have models in this book. I have taken pictures of the following two models: Paul Jackson's Mouse, and Alfredo Giunta's Snail.
The Encyclopedia of Origami and Papercraft Techniques, Paul Jackson, 1991
Although the book is not completely about origami is has a wonderful selection of pictures. The front of the book has instruction on how to make basically anything with paper. Includes techniques for origami, paper mache, paper making, paper engineering, pop-ups, and paper sculpture. The second half of the book is all pictures of master models in all these categories. In the origami section includes pictures of Robert Lang's Murex Shell, Alfredo Giunta's Insects, Akira Yoshizawa's Sheep, and Toshikazu Kawasaki's Roses.
Origami for the Connoisseur, Kunihiko Kasahara and Toshie Takahama, 1987
This has a lot of wonderful projects and a good sampling of work from various artists including: Froebel, Fuse, Maekawa, Kawasaki, Sonobe, Brill, Haga, Fujimoto, Hosoyo, Matsumoto, Kohji, Fushimi, Montroll, and Engel. Some of the coolest looking projects are: SR-71, 900 unit modular sphere, a Clear Bottle, and a Malay Tapir.
  Origami Omnibus, Kunihiko Kasahara, 1988
This is a giant collection of designs. I used to subscribe to the origami mailing list and this was a much discussed book, which seemed a critical book collection must. I was just recently able to find a copy as the sixth edition was just released. The models are too numerous to list but I will list some of the animals and chapter headings. My comments are in parentheses I have tried not to give too much away while still describing some of the types of things he covers. But needless to say I'm in my first couple of hours with this book and I'm addicted!

Chapters: Expressions Unlimited (Masks), Origami to Make You Think (an interesting chapter on the geometric puzzles and art of origami), Fly Crane Fly!, Starting the Animals, Beautiful Polyhedrons, Viva Origami.

The Complete Book of Origami, Robert Lang, 1988
This book is really fun! It has a great looking bi-plane which I am looking forward to trying to make and a bunch of great moving models including the infamous cuckoo clock. =) My monkey had a little trouble moving but that could be because until recently I was working with regular copying paper.

Mythological Creatures and the Chinese Zodiac in Origami, John Montroll, 1996
These are a lot of fun to make and he provides a brief description of each animal. Although I think the description of a tiger person is a little depressing.

The Art of Origami, Samuel Randlett, 1961
Although most of the models presented in this book are fairly simple, it contains the most information about the history, types, and uses for origami that I have seen. It also contains some great pictures of origamists and their creations. Some of the models in the book are listed below. The book also contains a number of traditional folds, and several designs by other artists.

Animal Models: Knot Bat, Vampire Bat, Polar Bear Cub, Shorthorn Bull, Camel, Dachshund, Trojan Horse, Mouse, Rabbit, Springer Spaniel, Boston Terrier, Duck, Parrot, Pelican, Pheasant, Rooster, Angelfish, Blue Whale, Butterfly, Grasshopper, Moth, Brontosaurus, Cobra, Stegosaurus, Turtle, Sea Turtle.

  Living Origami, Takuji Sugimura, 1983
This a very small and fun book, filled with fun creations including several finger puppets. It is also where I first heard of the idea to cut many squares out of a single square, leaving selected corners attached, and then folding many small models connected.
Kusudama: Ball origami, Makoto Yamguchi, 1990
This is a pretty good origami ball book, although I have seen better. There are 26 different ball models.
Origami Japanese Paper Folding, Asahi Origami Club, Tokyo Japan. 1959
This was the first book I learned from. The first thing I learned to make being a balloon. It also has a pretty nice german shepherd dog made from two pieces of paper, and a fox puppet that was fun to pass around in school.
